DPS Region 4 Commander selected
Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) Director Steven C. McCraw has announced the appointment of Carey Matthews as the Regional Commander for DPS Region 4, which includes El Paso, Midland, Odessa, and the majority of west Texas. Immediately prior to his selection as Regional Commander, Matthews served as Highway Patrol Major in Region 4 in Midland.
“Region 4 plays a vital role in border security, and we will continue to work proactively with our local, state and federal partners to address law enforcement concerns of vital interest to us all,” said Commander Matthews.
Matthews began his career with DPS in 1988. After graduation from recruit training, he served as a Driver License Trooper in Brownfield. He transferred to Highway Patrol, Lubbock in 1989. He promoted to Sergeant in 1996 and was stationed in Midland. Matthews was promoted to Lieutenant in 2001 and stationed in Corpus Christi. In 2004, he was promoted to Captain and served as a Highway Patrol Inspector in Austin and later transferred to Corpus Christi as a Highway Patrol Captain.
Matthews is a graduate of the Northwestern University’s School of Police Staff and Command.
