NEW ORLEANS — The Coast Guard is searching for a crewmember reported missing from an oil tanker, Thursday, approximately 150 miles offshore Grand Isle in the Gulf of Mexico.
Missing is Feng Li, 31.
At 10:10 a.m., watchstanders at Coast Guard Sector Houston overheard a VHF-FM radio broadcast from the 750-foot vessel, New Confidence, reporting that a crewmember fell overboard wearing casual clothing and no life jacket. Sector Houston relayed the distress call to the Eighth Coast Guard District command center.
Currently searching are:
Two Coast Guard Aviation Training Center Mobile, Ala., HC-144A Ocean Sentry aircraft and crews;
A Coast Guard Air Station Corpus Christi, Texas HU-25 Guardian aircraft and crew;
A Coast Guard Air Station Clearwater, Fla., HC-130 Hercules aircraft and crew;
The 87-foot Coast Guard Cutter Heron and crew from Sabine Pass, Texas.
"We are searching an area the size of Rhode Island," said Lt. Christina Lowe, command duty officer for the Eighth District command center. "We have searched for approximately three hours offshore Grand Isle."
The Coast Guard issued an Urgent Marine Information Broadcast to mariners in the area.
