Lamar University combines undergraduate, graduate and international admissions
to better serve students
As part of an effort to better use resources and better serve students, Lamar University has reorganized its admissions office, centralizing undergraduate, graduate and international admissions into a single department.
“We’re excited about it because it brings together all university admissions processing and allows us to respond to applicants more quickly,” said Melissa Gallien, director of admissions.
Previously, Gallien’s staff handled undergraduate admissions while the College of Graduate Studies oversaw graduate admissions and international admissions for both undergraduate and graduate students. The Office of International Student Services remains within the College of Graduate Studies and assists current and prospective international students with visas, financial verifications and other needs.
By combining admissions processing for all types of students, the university is able to capitalize on streamlined procedures recently implemented by the Office of Admissions.
All applications are now submitted through the Apply Texas online system, which is more convenient for students than paper forms. Lamar University also is moving toward a paperless environment by accepting more transcripts electronically and by using optical imaging to store documents received as paper. This allows admissions personnel and academic advisors to quickly and easily access all necessary information related to student records.
On the graduate level, admissions decisions still are handled on a department-by-department basis. However, the switch to electronic records has allowed admissions personnel to supply departments with information on their graduate applicants more quickly, leading to faster decisions for applicants.
Once a decision has been made, applicants are notified via e-mail, providing a faster response than postal mail. Additionally, applicants can check their admission status online at any time to see whether decisions have been made or if they need to supply other information.
The admissions changes, which took effect on Sept. 1, are part of LU’s move to a strategic enrollment management model to maximize efforts to recruit and retain students who will become successful alumni.
A comprehensive public university and a member of The Texas State University System, Lamar University offers online and on campus programs with more than 100 degree programs leading to bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral degrees.
