Port of Houston Authority Named "Port Authority of the Year"
by Containerisation International
Port Authority Recognized for Fast Yet Safe Cargo Handling, "Green" Efforts
HOUSTON -- The Port of Houston Authority was honored as "Port Authority of the Year" at the Containerisation International Awards 2011 event earlier today. Ricky Kunz, Vice President, Origination, accepted the award on behalf of the Port Authority at a ceremony in London, England.
International recognition as Port Authority of the Year by Containerisation International is important and meaningful, noted James T. Edmonds, Chairman of the Port Commission of the Port of Houston Authority.
"This recognition by our industry peers is particularly gratifying," Edmonds said. "Maritime community members know firsthand the challenges of efficient cargo handling and also the importance of ongoing environmental innovation. We are most grateful for the honor."
The awards recognize companies and individuals that have made outstanding contributions over the past year to the container liner shipping and logistics industry, through innovative, proactive or pioneering achievements.
The Port Authority of the Year award recognized the Port of Houston Authority for its efforts to ensure quick, safe handling of cargo, as well as its actions to improve the environment.
Among its recent accomplishments, the Port Authority has been routinely selected by the federal government to test and implement new standards for the industry with environmental and sustainability initiatives.
The Port Authority built and operates its Bayport Container Terminal as the greenest terminal possible, while positioning Houston to take advantage of an expanded Panama Canal in 2014. As an environmental steward, the Port Authority has gone above and beyond, to improve air and water quality, reduce sound and emissions, and minimize the impact of its operations on the environment.
The Port of Houston Authority competed with an impressive list of international ports –Antwerp Port Authority, Grand Port Maritime du Havre, Port of Barcelona, Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, and Port of Rijeka Authority – to win the award.
In addition, the Port Authority was on the short list for two other award categories: Corporate Social Responsibility of the Year and Terminal Operating Company of the Year.
The annual awards categories also included Container Supplier / Lessor of the Year, Global Ocean Carrier of the Year, Innovation Technology of the Year, Investment In People of the Year, Lifetime Achievement Award, Logistics Service Provider of the Year, and Regional Ocean Carrier of the Year.
