The Time to Apply for HISD Magnet Schools for the Next School Year is Quickly-Approaching
The Application Period for HISD Magnet Schools Begins November 7
Houston Independent School District Superintendent Terry Grier is encouraging parents to visit the HISD magnet school open house on Saturday, November 5, 2011 at the Hattie Mae White Educational Support Center, located at 4400 West 18th Street. The open house will take place from 9:00 a.m. until Noon.
Magnet schools offer a theme-based curriculum that allows students to select schools based on their expressed interests, talents, skills, or career path. A full listing of HISD magnet school options can be found at www.houstonisd.org/magnet.
“Magnet schools are a great way to fuel a child’s love of learning through their own declared interests,” said Dr. Grier. “We encourage parents to explore your children’s interests and ideas for their future and determine if one of these schools might be right for them.”
HISD is committed to ensuring that every child has equal access to the district’s broad range of school choice options.
“We are working very hard so to make all families become aware of the variety of programs offered in magnet schools,” said Lupita Hinojosa, Assistant Superintendent of School Choice. “We encourage parents and students who have enjoyed the magnet school experience to please share that information with other families that may benefit. We have room for more in many of these great schools.”
Fifty-six elementary schools, 26 middle schools and 31 high schools offer a wide variety of programs including Health and Medical Sciences, Fine Arts, Architecture, Aviation, Business, and Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM).
HISD will begin accepting applications for elementary school, middle school and high school magnet programs for the 2012-2013 school year beginning November 7, 2011. The deadline for applications is January 6, 2012. Notifications for assignments of children to specific schools will take place March 23, 2012.
