Island Authorities Seek Help to Solve Suspicious Palm Tree Fires
Community Urged to Report Criminal Activity
Galveston, TX – The Galveston Fire Marshal’s Office is asking for the community’s help to catch the individual or individuals setting Island palm trees on fire. Arson investigators report that five trees have been set on fire this year alone. In 2009, firefighters responded to 34 palm tree fires. Anyone who sees a burning palm tree or fire should call 9-1-1. Anyone with tips or information about the fires is urged to call the Galveston Police Department’s non-emergency number, 409-765-3702.
“Given the region’s dry conditions and elevated fire danger its imperative that we apprehend anyone engaged in these activities,” stated Galveston Fire Marshal Gilbert Robinson.
The Fire Marshal’s office is working closely with the Galveston Police Department to solve these fires. Each fire was started with a combustible fluid and the majority of fires occurred in the early morning hours. Officials believe there may be more than one arsonist responsible for the palm tree fires.
