First Responders Care Enough to Wear Pink & Raise Funds for Cancer Awareness
Hundreds of local first responders will be participating in the Take a Lap for Life event, part of the Pink Heals Tour that will be making a stop at this year’s HOTZONE Conference on Friday, October 21, 2011. Officials will kick off the event at 5:30 p.m. at the Crowne Plaza Hotel parking lot and then participants will cross over to Reliant’s Green Lot located at the corner of Kirby Dr. and McNee Rd. to Take a Lap for Life.
“Harris County welcomes the Pink Heals Tour and supports its endeavor to educate the community about cancer,” said Harris County Judge Ed Emmett.
The event will display the Pink Heals fire trucks while pink-clad firefighters and law enforcement officers take a lap to raise funds for cancer awareness and support projects.
The Pink Heals Tour is a national non-profit group, made up of mostly firefighters, that spends roughly two months out of the year traveling across the U.S. to raise cancer awareness and funds for people who have been affected by the disease. Funds raised are distributed locally.
The 12th Annual HOTZONE Conference is taking place October 20-23 at the Crowne Plaza Hotel - Reliant Park. The goal of HOTZONE is to provide training for first responders on how to safely and efficiently handle hazardous materials incidents which threaten public health and the environment.
“Our annual conference brings together local, state and federal HazMat responders seeking to improve their skills,” said Bob Royall, Assistant Chief, Response & Recovery at Harris County Fire Marshal's Office. “And this year we’re proud to sponsor the Pink Heals event.”
