Jane Elizabeth Hayles DohertyJane Elizabeth Hayles Doherty, 85, of Galveston, entered eternal peace on October 20, 2011 at UTMB hospital in Galveston, Texas. She was born August 7, 1926 to Viola and Foster Hayles in Bay Minette, Alabama. Mrs. Doherty has been a resident of Galveston since 1936 and fell in love with the Island. She was a whiz on the history of the Island and could answer any question about the Island anyone would ask her. Jane attended Galveston Public Schools and was with class of 1943 from Ball High School. Jane and Joe met while in high school and celebrated their 64th wedding anniversary in June. Her catholic religion was extremely important to her and she was a long time member of Sacred Heart Church. Jane was a secretary with the Coast Guard Marine Safety Office and retired in 1995. After retirement Mrs. Doherty did volunteer work for St. Mary's Cathedral Basilica and for the Grand Opera House in Galveston. Mrs. Doherty loved to travel and learn about the culture of all the countries she visited. She loved to crochet and made many beautiful Afghans for family and friends. Mrs. Doherty was a member of Beta Sigma Phi Sorority for over 50 years. Jane was always ready to reach out and give a helping hand to anyone who needed help.

Jane is preceded in death by her parents, Viola and Foster Hayles; her son, Joseph John Doherty, Jr.; brother, Foster Hayles; and sister, Janette Smith.

She is survived by her husband, Joseph J. Doherty; grandson, Joseph (Trey) Doherty, III; granddaughter, Tara Colleen Schmidt; great grandson Joseph (Jay) Doherty, IV; sisters-in-law, Marguerite Kahla and husband, Cecil, and Patsy Westmoreland and husband, Ray; numerous nieces and nephews; and special friends, Ethel Nevius and Pauline Murphy.

Visitation will be after 5:00 p.m. on Sunday, October 23, 2011, at Malloy & Son Funeral Home. A Rosary will begin at 7:00 p.m.

Funeral mass will be held at 10:00 a.m on Monday, October 24, 2011, at Sacred Heart Church with Father E. J. Stein, OFM, as Celebrant. Entombment will follow services at Calvary Catholic Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Thomas Dispensa, Stephen Garris, Steven Kahla, Bruce Kahla, Alan Westmoreland, and Danny Gillaspia.  Honorary pallbearers will be George Garris, and James Garris

Jane will be sadly missed by her dear family and friends.

In lieu of flowers, the family request that donations be made to your favorite charity.
