HISD Hosting Magnet Awareness Week

Open house on Saturday, November 5

School tours from November 7–11

The Houston Independent School District is proud to provide parents with a wide variety of choices in public education through its magnet programs. In an effort to encourage students and parents to become familiar with HISD’s magnet programs, the district is hosting its annual Magnet Awareness Week beginning Saturday, November 5 until Friday, November 11. Activities include a district wide open house and tours of individual school magnet programs.

HISD’s Magnet Open House will be held on Saturday, November 5, from 9:00 a.m. to noon at the Hattie Mae White Educational Support Center (4400 West 18th Street). More than 100 HISD schools with magnet programs will have informational booths at the event. Parents and students will also be able to obtain information regarding the magnet application process.

Tours of individual schools with magnet programs will take place from Monday, November 7 through Friday, November 11.  Tours will be conducted each day starting at 1:00 p.m. except on Wednesday, November 9 which will begin at 9:00 a.m.  After November 11, parents should phone individual schools for a schedule of tours and other events that will be conducted through early January.

“I encourage all parents to come to the Magnet Open House on Saturday and then tour as many magnet schools that they and their child might be interested in,” said Lupita Hinojosa, HISD Assistant Superintendent of School Choice. “HISD has 113 schools with magnet programs and there is no limit to the number of programs students can apply to.  I am certain the HISD Magnet programs can meet your child’s interests, talents, and academic needs.”

HISD will begin accepting applications for its magnet programs on November 7. All applications must be postmarked no later than January 6, 2012 for guaranteed consideration in the first round.
