COM Offers Free Computer Training Classes

On Saturday, Oct. 29, 14 community members attended a free basic Internet class at College of the Mainland to learn how to use e-mail and surf the Web. Students learned the different types of Internet browser programs, different e-mail websites and even how to use Facebook.

Janet Statum, of LaMarque, was excited to learn how to use the Internet and check her own e-mail. “My six-year-old knows how to use the computer and helps me get on to check my email, but I want to be able to do this myself and be able to understand what she is doing on the computer,” said Statum. She plans on attending all of the classes and looks forward to become more computer savvy.

Jose Victoria, of Texas City, saw a flyer for the classes at COM, while dropping his daughter off at class, and wanted to learn how to use the Internet. “Everything is online, applying for jobs, checking the weather, getting directions and even listening to music. I signed up for the classes because I need to know how to do these things,” said Victoria.

Many of the students had seen the flyer at the Workforce Commission office and were told that there were many jobs available that required online applications. “I want to be able to apply for jobs online and learn more computer skills that are required for some of the jobs,” said Susana Martinez, of Texas City.

COM’s Sigma Delta Chapter of Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society is offering free computer training to community members. The classes are held each Saturday from 2 to 3:30 p.m. in the Tech/Voc Building, room 1436.
Subjects include Microsoft Word on Nov. 5 and Microsoft Power Point and Excel on Nov. 12. Limited spots are available. For more information, call 409-933-8112.
