Lamar University student organizations honor Veterans Day

Lamar University will honor the sacrifice, commitment and service of veterans on Veterans Day, Friday, Nov. 11 with a ceremony, “Remembering our Heroes,” presented by the 23rd Cardinal Command and the Alpha Upsilon Chapter of Phi Iota Alpha Fraternity. The ceremony will take place in the quadrangle at Lamar University at 11 a.m.

“We definitely wanted to do something to honor the service of the veterans not just at Lamar but across the nation,” said Willie Broussard, Division of Distance Learning Associate Director and sponsor of the 23rd Cardinal Command. The 23rd Cardinal Command is a new Lamar University student organization that helps support students who are active military members or dependents/spouses. Any Lamar student is able to join the organization.

The Phi Iota Alpha Fraternity has collaborated with 23rd Cardinal Command on the project. “Phi Iota Alpha has been great to work with. They had reserved the quadrangle before us, and they agreed to work together on the project,” said Broussard.

The ceremony will start at 11 a.m. with the Precession of Wreaths, donated by Carl Johnsen Florist Inc, and the Presentation of Colors. The national anthem will be sung followed by a welcome and a moment of silence at 11:11 a.m. Taps, played by Rebecca Kent, a music major from Orange, will conclude the moment of silence followed by remarks from Stephen Doblin, Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs; Luis Lopez, President of Phi Iota Alpha; and Jay Lawrence, Commander of 23rd Cardinal Command. A reception for veterans will be held in the Setzer Center in Room 210 after the ceremony.

Lamar University has been named a military friendly school by GI Jobs Magazine for two years and Military Advanced Education Magazine for three years. “A military friendly school is one that allows for active military members and veterans to complete their educational pursuits,” said Broussard.
