Students look for options during University Day

Many students from Alvin Community College and area high schools arrived at the Student Center and Texas Room on November 29 to speak with representatives of 25 colleges and universities as part of University Day.

ACC student Carynn Gonzales, 19 , of Alvin made her way around the different displays to look at various programs. She is undecided on her major but hoped to get some insight during the event about possible psychology programs.

“I’m thinking about counseling,” she said.

Several students from Eagle Heights Christian School in Pearland spoke with different universities about their campuses and what types of degrees they offer. Many high school students have a difficult time trying to determine where they should go for higher education, said Karen Gapsiewicz, science teacher at Eagle Heights.

“Now they’re seeing their faces and seeing the information,” Gapsiewicz said. “They’re seeing their options.”

Texas State University Admission Counselor Jamar Keaton said University Day was a great opportunity to reach out to transfer students from ACC.

“A fair like this really allows students to get the information,” he said.

ACC has hosted University Day for several years and it has been an excellent way to help students wanting to transfer to a four-year institution, said Alpha Trevino, ACC academic advisor and University Day coordinator.

Trevino was happy with the turnout at this year’s event.

“Some of the teachers let their students out early so they could come,” she said. “This is wonderful.”
