Begin your “HOLIDAZE!” at Gladys City Dec. 10 and 11

Lamar University’s Spindletop-Gladys City Boomtown Museum will embrace the joy of the Christmas season with HOLIDAZE! at Gladys City – a Wildcatter Weekend special event – on Dec. 10 and 11. The museum buildings and grounds will be decorated and bustling with people preparing for the holiday season, much like the boomtown in the early 1900s would have been.

Activities from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. on both Saturday, Dec. 10, and Sunday, Dec. 11, are planned to entertain the whole family. Craft artisans will help children make Christmas boxes, bracelets and pine cone ornaments. Children also will have an opportunity to write and mail letters to Santa in the Gladys City Post Office. Demonstrations spotlighting real-life blacksmithing, pen and knife making, and corn husk doll making will provide insight into skills used in everyday life at the time of the Spindletop oil boom. A photo opportunity in an 1890s surrey provided by Broussard’s will allow families to record memories of the day.

Those interested in more physically active entertainment will be able to take a train ride, play in a bounce house, dance the Virginia Reel or participate in stick horse races.

Special entertainment will be provided by storytellers Mary and Neil Early, the Volunteer Voices from the Best Years Center, Sons of the Confederate Veterans-Dick Dowling Camp and the Big Thicket Outlaws.

Inside the saloon, attendees can enjoy a wassail tasting. The Spindletop gusher will blow each day at 6:30 p.m., weather permitting.

Admission for the event is $2 for children ages 4-12. Parents, grandparents and guardians will be admitted free of charge with children’s paid admission. Regular adult admission is $5 or $3 for seniors over 60. The event is sponsored in part by a grant from ExxonMobil.

The Spindletop-Gladys City Boomtown Museum is located on the corner of University Drive and Cardinal Drive on the Lamar University campus. For more information, please call 409-880-1750 or visit www.gladyscity.org.
