Operation R.E.D. assists Southeast Texas Food Bank

The Lamar University Department of Student Development and Leadership recently announced a new volunteerism opportunity for student organizations and university departments to assist the Southeast Texas Food Bank.  Operation R.E.D. (Reaching Every Doorstep) is a partnership between Lamar and the local food bank that will feature faculty, staff and students volunteering at the facility each Friday beginning the spring 2012 semester.

“This program is a great opportunity for students to learn leadership skills and gives the volunteers an opportunity to reach out to the community,” said Ashley Austin, LU student coordinator for the program.  “Our volunteers will be assembling boxes, sorting and organizing canned goods and other donations, as well as actually making some deliveries.”

Lamar has a long history of support with the food bank.  LU faculty, staff and students have participated in the Annual Setzer Student Center Food Drive during Thanksgiving and Christmas for the past 15 years.  This year the annual drive netted more than 2,400 non-perishable food items totaling nearly 1,135 pounds.

“The items we receive have to be processed before it goes out to our member agencies,” said Emelie Irving, executive director of the Beaumont facility.  “These volunteers from Lamar will help so much in that effort while also strengthening our ongoing relationship with the university.”

Scheduling for Operation R.E.D. began Dec. 1 and transportation will be provided if requested.  Student organizations and Lamar departments that wish to be included on the Operation R.E.D. volunteer schedule should contact Ashley Austin at 880-1735 or Ashley Spicer-Runnels at 880-8085.
