New Dynamic Message Signs Alert Motorists to Traffic Updates, Emergencies

Motorists may have noticed new electronic signs as they travel along Highway 6 in Missouri City—the newest feature of the City’s $2.8 million Intelligent Transportation System to help manage traffic flow. The project is fully funded by federal dollars.

The dynamic message signs, similar to electronic message signs on major highways, provide drivers with real-time information to help them choose the best route of travel.

A total of six signs are now installed at three locations north and south along Highway 6—near Dulles Avenue, at Lake Olympia and at Darby Lane one mile past the Fort Bend Tollway exit. The boards are essential in helping to inform motorists of important information, including Amber Alerts and Missing Persons notifications.

The City’s state-of-the-art traffic technology is part of an overall traffic system upgrade. When fully operational, the system will provide integrated monitoring and management of traffic through a central operating system for traffic signals throughout Missouri City.

Ultimately, the system will help achieve increased transportation system efficiency, enhanced mobility, improved safety and offer fuel efficiencies for motorists.
