"We've been working for a long time with the museum," said PHA Chair Jim Edmonds. "I think it is a great asset to the port and to the community in general and I am very pleased to see us taking another step forward."
“It’s a great day,” said Niels Aalund, chair of the museum’s board of trustees. “It’s a great win-win for the Port of Houston and the Houston Maritime Museum."
Aalund said he has mixed emotions because Jim Manzolillo, founder of the museum who has passed away, could not participate in the signing.
"This was his dream and passion," Aalund said. "I am certainly thinking of him today as we sign this memorandum of understanding with the port of Houston."
Aalund said he hopes that the move to the new location can be accomplished within the next three years.
"We're really excited about the leadership at the Houston Maritime Museum under the direction of John Kendall, our executive director, as well as a new addition to the staff, Diane Lipton, who is our director of development," Aalund said. "There is reason for optimism;we are very excited."
