HOUSTON - Select female inmates at the Harris County Jail will get the privilege of spending time with their children and celebrating Christmas with them Tuesday.

Fifteen carefully chosen female inmates in the HCSO's Reentry Services Program will have the opportunity to be reunited with their children at the Harris County jail and present them with gifts donated by Navidad en el Barrio. There will also be food, drinks and a visit by Santa Claus - all courtesy of Navidad en el Barrio.

The women are minimum risk inmates who have had good relationships with their children.

"I want to make sure these inmates realize the consequences of making poor choices - in this case spending Christmas in jail and away from family," said Sheriff Adrian Garcia.

The female inmates are also working with Reentry Services in setting goals for a successful transition back into the community in efforts to reduce recidivism.

Children accompanied by adults can visit inmates during routine visitation days without physical contact. This is the second year the HCSO is partnering with Navidad en el Barrio to afford inmates this kind of privilege.

Navidad en el Barrio is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization dedicated to improving the life of the less fortunate in our communities and bringing smiles to those who otherwise might have lost all hope.
