HPD Homicide Division Sergeant M. Countryman and Officer R. Olive reported:
Houston police officers were called to Ben Taub General Hospital after Mr. Brooks died there and had trauma injuries.
A preliminary investigation led officers to 4200 Barberry where multiple bullet casings were found. It was unknown if the assault and shooting incidents were related.
Further investigation identified Ellis as one suspect in the case and, last Wednesday (Dec. 14), he was taken into custody without incident. The following day, Dec. 15, Steamer was arrested without incident and charged with theft in connection with the case. On Monday (Dec. 19), Steamer was charged with the murder of Mr. Brooks.
