No Refusal Program Holiday Weekends Announced
HOUSTON
- Harris County District Attorney Patricia Lykos is giving fair warning to intoxicated individuals: stay off the streets of Harris County because police will be out in force to protect the people from dangerous drivers during this Christmas and holiday season.
The District Attorney's Office No Refusal Program will deploy countywide to curb impaired motorists, District Attorney Lykos announced Thursday.
Under the No Refusal Program, Harris County prosecutors team with police to request warrants for mandatory blood testing of suspected DWI drivers who refuse to submit to voluntary breath tests for intoxicants.
The office will be working with all area police agencies during the No Refusal Program weekends for December 23 and December 24 (Christmas Eve), and on December 30, December 31 (New Year's Eve) and January 1 (New Year's Day).
District Attorney Lykos observed, "This is a time of celebration and reflection. The greatest gift we can give one another is to be considerate and responsible drivers."
According to Catherine Evans, Chief of the District Attorney's Vehicular Crimes Section, those times are typically associated with festivities involving driving and alcohol or other intoxicants. She stressed that driving while impaired is never justified.
"You don't want to spend Christmas or New Year's morning in jail, having ruined the holidays for you, your family, and maybe even an innocent bystander," said Evans. "Make your plans before you start drinking so that you can get home safely or have a place to stay put."
