Leland Surovik named new TCISD Athletic Director and head football coach
TEXAS CITY – On Tuesday, the Texas City Independent School District Board of Trustees voted unanimously to name Leland Surovik as the Texas City ISD Athletic Director and Head Football Coach.
Surovik currently serves in the same capacity at Columbia High School in West Columbia. He took the football team to back-to-back 3A State Semi-final games in 2010 and 2011. Under his leadership as athletic director, Columbia High School garnered post-season success in baseball, softball, girls and boys basketball, boys and girls golf, girls soccer and boys cross country. In addition, Surovik earned All-District Coach of the Year titles for District 29 3A in both 2010 and 2011 and was the All Brazoria County Coach of the Year in 2010.
“We believe Coach Surovik is truly the right match for Texas City ISD,” stated Diane Martin, Co-Interim Superintendent of Schools. “He is an outstanding coach and an experienced athletic director. He has developed a winning program in Columbia and we have confidence that Texas City ISD’s programs will advance to the next level under his leadership.”
Surovik’s career in education began in 1996 with the La Marque Cougars. He taught science in La Marque and was the Secondary Coach, Special Teams Coordinator and Strength and Conditioning Coach during the 1996 and 1997 seasons when they won back-to-back State Championships in football. He went to Columbia High School in 1998 as the Assistant Head Coach, Defensive Coordinator and Special Teams Coordinator. He served in those roles until 2007 when he became the Athletic Director and Head Football Coach.
Surovik graduated from Southwest Texas State University in 1996 with a bachelor’s degree in exercise and sports science. He and his wife have a son, who is a sophomore, and a daughter, who is in 8th grade.
“We are proud and excited to have Coach Surovik join our team,” said Martin. “We look forward to starting a new era in TCISD athletics.”
