College sets open house for people interested in medical assisting

HOUSTON – San Jacinto College will host an open house for people interested in medical assisting, a rapidly growing health care career field. The event is free and open to the public.

The weeklong open house will be held Feb. 13 through Feb. 17 from 12 p.m. to 6 p.m. in the College’s medical assisting classroom and lab, located in Room N7.151 the Burleson Building of the North Campus at 5800 Uvalde Road.

The open house will feature demonstration stations staffed by medical assisting students. Hands-on activities, such as body mass index procedures, will allow visitors a sample of work performed by medical assistants.

Visitors can also learn about medical assisting certification classes, which will be offered at the North Campus in summer 2012.

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the medical assistant job market is projected to be one of the fastest growing career fields in the next decade. The growth will be driven by an increase in group practices, clinics, and other health care facilities that need support personnel, particularly the flexible medical assistant who handles both administrative and clinical duties.

San Jacinto College offers a wide range of degree plans and course options in many health care and allied health fields of study at all three campuses. The medical assisting program is offered at the North Campus only.
