Lone Star Harbor Safety Committee

The first meeting of the new Lone Star Harbor Safety Committee was held on Friday at the Houston Pilots Office in Deer Park. Release

Coast Guard Captain James Whitehead, who is Captain of the Port, welcomed maritime stakeholders from the region to the meeting and presided over approval of a charter for the new organization and election of officers.

“The Lone Star Harbor Safety Committee provides a public forum to address Maritime Transportation System issues with particular emphasis on navigation safety related matters involving the ports of Houston, Galveston, Texas City and Freeport, including the associated waterways of the Gulf Intracoastal Waterway and offshore lightering zones,” said the mission statement in the charter.

Thomas P. Marian of Buffalo Marine Services, Inc. was elected chair of the new organization.

Marian presided over the remainder of the meeting and the election of John Peterlin of the Port of Galveston as vice chair; and James Prazak of Tricon Energy, John Salvesen of Odfjell USA and Niels Aalund of the West Gulf Maritime Association as members of the executive committee.

The group elected Tava Foret, vice president of regulatory affairs at the ACTion group companies as executive secretary.

The group voted to create four subcommittees.

The Navigation Operations Subcommittee will be chaired by Christos Sotirelis with Gal-Tex Pilots.

The Dredging Marine Construction Subcommittee will be co-chaired by Mark Coyle and Captain Marcus Woodring of the Port of Houston.

The Waterways Optimization Subcommittee will be chaired by Jim Andrews of G&H Towing.

The next meeting of the Lone Star Harbor Safety Committee will be held on May 18 at the Houston Pilots Office in Deer Park.
