Joseph John Doherty

Joseph John DohertyJoseph John Doherty, 87, of Galveston, passed away Monday, February 20th, at Regency Village Care Center in Webster, TX.  Joe, as he was known to everyone, was born in Galveston, TX on December 11, 1924, to Barbara and Daniel Doherty.  He attended Galveston public schools and joined the US Navy in September 1942, serving 27 months on the Air Craft Carrier, USS Breton, in the Pacific during World War II.  Joe served in the US Navy for five years.  He was a plasterer by trade and was a member of Local #79 for 26 years.  Joe retired from the UTMB Maintenance Department after 22 years.  He loved to build houses and was always ready to lend a helping hand to anyone with their building.  Joe was a life member of the VFW and a life member of the Knights of Columbus.


Joe was preceded in death by his wife of 61 years, Jane Hayles Doherty; son, Joseph John Doherty, Jr.; parents, Barbara and Daniel Doherty; brothers, Daniel and Edmund Doherty; and sisters, Kathleen Dispensa and Barbara Gillaspia.


He is survived by his grandson, Joseph (Trey) Doherty, III, and wife, Heather; granddaughter, Tara Schmidt; great grandson, Joseph (Jay) Doherty, IV; sisters, Marguerite Kahla and husband, Cecil, and Patsy Westmoreland and husband, Ray; many loving nieces and nephews and numerous dear friends.


Joe’s family will receive visitors after 5:00 pm, Thursday, February 23rd, at Malloy & Son Funeral Home.  A rosary will be held at 6:30 pm.


Graveside service will be held at 11:00 am, Friday, February 24th, at Calvary Cemetery Mausoleum in Galveston.


Pallbearers will be Bruce Kahla, Steven Kahla, Danny Gillaspia, Alan Westmoreland, Thomas Dispensa, and Larry Gillaspia.  Honorary pallbearers will be George Garris, Cecil Kahla, and Ray Westmoreland.


In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Hospice Care Team, Inc., 1708 Amburn, Suite C, Texas City, TX 77591 or your favorite charity.
