GHA and the City of Galveston Awarded HUD HOME Investment Partnerships Program Grant
Galveston, Texas
- The Galveston Housing Authority (GHA) and the City of Galveston have been awarded a HUD (Housing and Urban Development) HOME Investment Partnerships Program Grant of $500,000 to provide affordable housing in Galveston.
Jointly they will build or rehabilitate three affordable single family homes. GHA and the City of Galveston will use local realtors to find appropriate properties in the city. The deadline for completing the three homes will be January 2013 when the grant ends. GRACE (Galveston Redevelopment and Community Enterprise) will be responsible for managing the grant for GHA.
President of the Board of GRACE James Dennis stated “This is a great example of what can be accomplished when two agencies team together to tackle the issue of affordable housing in Galveston.”
HOME provides formula grants to States and localities that communities use often in partnership with local nonprofit groups-to fund a wide range of activities that build, buy, and/or rehabilitate affordable housing for rent or homeownership or provide direct rental assistance to low-income people. HOME is the largest Federal block grant to State and local governments designed exclusively to create affordable housing for low-income households. Each year it allocates approximately $2 billion among the States and hundreds of localities nationwide.
