THOUSANDS OF TEXAS 4-H AND FFA MEMBERS PREPARE
FOR THE 2012 HOUSTON LIVESTOCK SHOW AND RODEO

HOUSTON — Texas 4-H and FFA members from across the state will soon call Reliant Park home for the run of the world’s largest livestock show. More than 15,000 junior exhibitors are expected to be a part of the 80th Houston Livestock Show, set for Feb. 28 – March 18.

Exhibitors represent more than 1,000 Texas 4-H clubs and FFA chapters, and will bring along with them a wide variety of animals to be shown in the junior divisions of the livestock competition, including market barrows, goats, lambs, poultry, and steers; beef and dairy heifers; breeding gilts and sheep; and commercial steers.

Many of these exhibitors also will compete in the 4-H and FFA judging contests, including poultry, meat, wool, livestock, dairy, and horse judging; range and pasture plant identification; floriculture; wildlife habitat evaluation; and nursery landscape. Some students will bring their applied works of art for the Agricultural Mechanics Project Show, with the hopes of returning to their hometowns with the grand champion title.

The four market animal auctions — barrow, lamb and goat, poultry (broiler and turkey), and steer — represent animals raised by junior exhibitors as food sources. The animals ranked as best in each of these categories are eligible for the market auctions.

The Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo is a Section 501(c)(3) charity that benefits youth, supports education, and facilitates better agricultural practices through exhibitions and presentation. Since its beginning in 1932, the Show has committed approximately $283 million to the youth of Texas. The 2012 Show runs Feb. 28 – March 18.
