Arthur George Trimarchi, 92, of Galveston, passed away Wednesday, March 28, 2012, at his residence. He was born in Galveston, Texas on December 17, 1919, the youngest of seven children, to Santina and Leo Trimarchi. He graduated from Ball High School and joined the US Marine Corps Reserves, 2nd Battalion, 8th Marines, commanded by Col. Clark W. Thompson. In 1940, the unit was re-designated the 7th Defense AAA Battalion and was called to active duty. The unit was stationed on the island of Samoa where they remained for 24 months. Arthur rose to the rank of Gunnery Sergeant. Upon discharge, he married Maydell Celli in 1946 and launched a career in the retail and wholesale grocery business, serving as President of the Galveston Retail Grocers Association. Arthur was active in the Knights of Columbus Council 787, receiving its “Man of the Year” award. He was a long-time member of the Galveston Noon Lions Club, serving in every capacity, including President. He was named a Melvin Jones International Fellow, the highest award in Lionism, and was the recipient of numerous other Lion awards. Most recently, the club created the Lion of the Year Arthur Trimarchi Award in his honor. Arthur also was a member of VFW Post 880. He served on the first City of Galveston Traffic Commission and served on the Galveston Housing Authority Board. He was the founding Treasurer of the Galveston Boys Club and a longtime member of the Sunday Morning Coffee Club. One association especially close to his heart was the 17th Street Rattlesnakes, a group of neighborhood teenage ball players organized in 1932.
Arthur was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Santo, Anthony, Johnny, and Amedeo Trimarchi; and sisters, Mary Broussard and Viola Hokanson.
Arthur is survived by his beloved wife of over 65 years, Maydell; daughter, Toni McCoy and husband Harry; son, Arthur G. Trimarchi, Jr.; son, Gregory and wife Mary Catherine; grandchildren, David McCoy, Jennifer McCoy, Anthony Trimarchi and wife Irma, Catherine Trimarchi; and great-grandchildren, Adriana and Sonja Trimarchi; sister-in-law, Joyce Hubbell; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Arthur’s family will receive visitors beginning at 12:00 noon, Friday, March 31st, at Malloy & Son Funeral Home. A rosary will begin at 2:00 pm, followed immediately by the funeral service. Burial will follow at Galveston Memorial Park in Hitchcock.
Pallbearers will be Bruno Cristelli, David McCoy, Rudy Teichman, Anthony Trimarchi, Albert “Sonny” Vaiani, and Richard “Rocky” Vaiani, Jr. Ross Novelli, Gino Vaiani and the members of the Galveston Lions Club will serve as honorary pallbearers.
