The Galveston Independent School District Board of Trustees on Wednesday voted unanimously to approve an interlocal tax collection agreement with the Galveston County Tax Assessor-Collector's Office.
According to Chief Financial Officer David Dworsky, the county's tax office will charge $0.27 per parcel for the assessment and collection of property taxes on behalf of the district.
“The current number of parcels of 47,991 equates to $12,615,” Dworsky said.
The board voted 4-3, with Beau Rawlins, Norman Pappous and Sandra Simmons opposed, to uphold the administration's action to dismiss a nurse at Morgan Elementary School following the end of the district's contract with the employee. The board held an appeal hearing on the proposed non-renewal of the contract prior to considering the item. The hearing was held in closed session.
The board took no action regarding the appeal of a contract non-renewal for a teacher at Weis Middle School. The teacher withdrew the appeal and will resign the position.
The board took no action regarding the approval of a property tax settlement offer with Thames Shipyard and Repair Company. The item was pulled from the agenda due to the board having voted on the item at a previous special meeting.
The board voted 5-0, with Matt Hay and Pappous abstaining, to approve the minutes of the April 11 special meeting.
All other items were approved by unanimous vote. All members were present. Agenda
