USACE Galveston District to remove remaining 150 feet of submerged pipeline from Houston Ship Channel
HOUSTON – The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Galveston District contracted with Weeks Marine Inc., for the removal of approximately 150 feet of submerged pipeline from the Houston Ship Channel which will begin at 8 a.m., May 2, 2012. The navigation channel is expected to remain closed until 2 p.m.
During routine channel surveying operations, crews encountered approximately 550 feet of the submerged pipeline in approximately 50 feet of water. Crews removed approximately 400 feet of this pipeline on April 10.
A contract crew consisting of divers will be in the water throughout salvage and removal operations as well as numerous tugboats, barges, cranes and crew boats. Divers will use sonar to detect the location of the remaining pipe for a safe removal.
