This Week on Stage

Performances and Concerts this week on stage in the Gulf Coast include “The Miss Firecracker Contest” at Island Etc East-End Theatre Company in Galveston and “The Pirates of Penzance”, presented by the Beaumont Community Players.

Island Etc East-End Theatre Company in Galveston will present “The Miss Firecracker Contest”, opening Friday at 8 p.m.

“Carnelle Scott believes winning the local beauty pageant is her only opportunity to leave her small, Southern hometown of Brookhaven, Mississippi in a ‘blaze of glory’,” said a synopsis on the Island Etc web site.  “Unfortunately, her efforts to secure the crown of Miss Firecracker are complicated by the facts that she isn’t cut from the beauty pageant mold, and she has to overcome her reputation as Miss Hot Tamale.  And then her cousins arrive, one a former pageant winner and the other a recently released mental patient.”

An additional performance is on Saturday at 8 p.m.  The show runs through June 2.

Beaumont Community Players will debut its production of “The Pirates of Penzance” on Friday at 7:30 p.m. at the Betty Greenberg Center for the Performing Arts in Beaumont.

Additional performances for this week are on Saturday at 2 p.m. and 7:30 p.m.  The production runs through May 26.

Miller Outdoor Theatre in Houston will host the Houston Ballet with their performance of “Giselle” on Friday.

“One of the most famous and widely performed works of the Romantic era, Giselle tells the story of a beautiful peasant girl deceived by Count Albrecht, her transformation into a Wili, the ghosts of women betrayed on their wedding day, and her forgiveness of her errant lover which results in his salvation,” said a synopsis on the Miller Theatre web site.

Additional showings are on Saturday and Sunday at 8 p.m.

Alley Theatre in Houston will launch preview performances of “What We’re Up Against”, with a show on Friday at 8 p.m.  Additional previews this week are on Saturday at 2:30 p.m. and 8 p.m, and Sunday at 7:30 p.m.  Official opening night is May 16 and the production runs through June 10.

Company OnStage in Houston continues with “The Foreigner” this week.

Performances are on Friday and Saturday at 8 p.m. The production runs through June 9.

Company OnStage’s production of “Cinderella” continues this week, with performances on Saturday at 11 a.m. and 1:30 p.m.  The show also runs through June 9.

Main Street Theater in Houston concludes its production of “Richard III” this week.

Performances are on Thursday at 7:30 p.m., Friday and Saturday at 8 p.m. and Sunday at 3 p.m.  The show runs through May 13.

Upcoming performances include “Noises Off", opening May 25 at the Alley Theatre, and "Bill W. and Dr. Bob", opening May 24 at College of the Mainland Community Theatre.
