by Jim Guidry
Thursday, May 10, 2012

A 48 year old man from Cincinnati was pronounced dead at John Sealy Hospital on Wednesday after an incident that ended with him face down in the surf across Seawall Boulevard from a convenience store at 10th Street and Seawall.  Galveston Island Beach Patrol Chief Peter Davis said the incident began in the strore.

“He was acting erratic and they called for the police,” he said.  “He left before police arrived, went down to the beach and rolled around the sand.”

Davis said the man then stood up and walked into knee-deep water.

“Not near rip current, not near the rocks,” Davis said.  “He went face down in the knee-deep water and floated there for less than a minute.”

Davis said bypassers went into the water and pulled them man back to the sand where he was “semi-conscious”.  Police and Beach Patrol officers arrived shortly and administered CPR.

EMS transported the man to the hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.
