Galveston College Board of Regents

The Galveston College Board of Regents on Wednesday voted 5-0-1, with Dr. Greg Roof abstaining, to approve an instructional agreement with Galveston Independent School District for dual credit/early admissions enrollment classes for the 2012-2013 school year.

According to Galveston College Director of Public Affairs Joe Huff, the accreditation authority for both the college and the school districts, has placed new rules on dual credit programs, requiring that such programs be taught by college instructors.

Under the agreement, the college will hire two professors with Master degrees in their fields of specialization as recommended by Galveston ISD. The school district will pay salaries and benefits for both college instructors, who will teach dual credit courses for students at the O'Connell College Preparatory School. (Correct)

The college board voted 5-1, with Roof opposed, to authorize Board Chair Tino Gonzalez to appoint a nominating committee for the nomination of board officers for 2012-2014.

The board voted unanimously to nominate Regent Raymond Lewis to serve on the Community College Association of Texas Trustees Board.

The board voted unanimously to approve an interlocal tax collection agreement with Galveston County. Under the agreement, the county's tax office will assess and collect property taxes for the college for a per parcel fee.

The board voted unanimously to renew an agreement with Gainer, Donnelly and Desroches for audit services.

The board voted unanimously to extend a bank depository services contract with Moody National Bank for another two years.

The college board voted unanimously to accept a $1,000 Innovation Award from the Texas Association of School Boards' Risk Management Fund. News Release

The board voted 5-0 to approve a proposal to purchase new classroom furniture. Roof was not present at the time of the vote.

The board voted unanimously to schedule a meeting for May 23 at 8 a.m. to canvass the results of the May 12 election.

All other items were approved by unanimous vote. Regents Gonzalez, Barbara Crews and Carroll Sunseri were absent.  Regent George Black presided over the meeting. Agenda

During the meeting, the board adopted a resolution of Gratitude to Roof for his service on the board. Roof did not seek another term on the board. An election for Roof's seat is being held on Saturday.
