Is this the Real Reason that the GHA Press Conference was Cancelled?
by David Stanowski
Saturday, May 12, 2012

This letter from Texas Appleseed and TXLIHIS may explain the hasty cancellation of GHA’s press conference, Thursday.

The Mayor’s Public Housing rebuilding plan is the dominant issue in this year’s City Council election.
In an effort to modify his plan to reduce the intense resistance to it in the City, and make it more acceptable to the voters, the GHA Board voted to make three changes at their 04 April meeting.

1. Scrap the scattered site program that had enraged the neighborhoods.
2. Reduce the total number of units from 971 to 718 to decrease the amount of damage it would do the soft local rental market.
3. Substitute 170 vouchers for Public Housing units to decrease the number that would be built.

“Mayor Joe Jaworski said Wednesday he hoped the change could quell some of the “political fights” in the community. “I’m counting on the various advocates, pro and con, and the representatives charged with overseeing the effort to stop the bickering and get behind a reasonable, forward-thinking plan put forth by the Galveston Housing Authority Board of Commissioners,” Jaworski said.” GCDN Story

However, this modification was merely a proposal. GHA would have to wait to get approval from HUD to substitute vouchers for Public Housing units and the GLO was still not happy with their mixed-income building scheme.

On Tuesday, 08 May, the GHA issued a press release stating that they would hold a press conference on Thursday, 10 May and that the Mayor, the GHA Commissioners, and GHA’s “partners” would attend.

Later that day, there was a candidate’s forum at Gulf Breeze where the Mayor commented that he would have some very exciting news to announce at Thursday’s press conference.

However, on Wednesday, 09 May, Texas Appleseed and TXLIHIS sent this letter to GLO, GHA, HUD and MBS. To say the least the letter is baffling! What is the real purpose of asking 60 complex and detailed questions? It will surely slow down the development process if they take the time to answer all of them which does not seem to be what Texas Appleseed and TXLIHIS want, but it is certainly a backhanded way to express their displeasure with the Mayor’s redevelopment plan by bogging them down in red tape.

In short, any “good news” that the Mayor and the GHA thought they could release to help them at the polls on Saturday was squelched by this letter, so there would be little point in holding the press conference.

The irony is that for two years the Mayor has looked to the Conciliation Agreement, entered into with Texas Appleseed and TXLIHIS, as his excuse and justification for his rebuilding plan. He refused to defend this city from the overreach by these members of the Poverty Industry who sought to control this city, and it appears as though they may have now turned on him!
Oh well, when you dance with the devil!
