From robots to maritime to music, San Jacinto College offers up a busy summer schedule

PASADENA, Texas — There will be something for everyone this summer as San Jacinto College (SJC) offers a variety of camps to keep K-12 students busy during those three months. New additions this year include underwater robotics, two different types of competitive robotics camps, and a writing workshop. Other summer favorites also return such as an extended maritime camp, KidSpot theatre camp, and Energy Venture, a camp that gives students a sneak peak at careers within the energy field.

Camps are located throughout the College’s three campuses. Central Campus is located at 8060 Spencer Highway in Pasadena; North Campus is located at 5800 Uvalde Road in Houston; and South Campus is located at 13735 Beamer Road in Houston. The following is a list of upcoming SJC camps.

  • Energy Venture Camp

Time: 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 8 a.m. to noon Friday

Dates: Central Campus, June 11-15, 18-22 / South Campus, June 11-15, 18-22, 25-29, and July16-20 / North Campus, July 9-13

Place: All three SJC campus locations

Details: Students, ages 12-15, will learn about the energy industry through this camp, which groups participants into teams for interactive games and exercises to learn about career opportunities in the energy field.

  • Maritime Venture Camp

Time: 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Dates: Central Campus, June 18-22 / North Campus, June 25-29 / South Campus, July 9-13

Place: All three SJC campus locations

Details: Students, ages 14-17, will learn of careers within the maritime industry through field trips to maritime companies and institutions, as well as tabletop exercises under the instruction of a retired U.S. Coast Guard master chief.

  • Water-Bots

Time: 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Before and after hours are available.

Dates: July 16-20 and July 23-27

Place: SJC Central Campus

Details: The Aerospace Academy at San Jacinto College presents a week of activities for students, ages 12-18, which includes hands-on instruction in water robotics, speakers from various fields that use robots, and a tour of NASA-Johnson Space Center and the Sonny Carter Neutral Buoyancy Lab, where astronauts train for their missions.

Cost: $250. Bring a sack lunch; lunch will only be provided on Friday.

  • FIRST Tech Challenge (FTC) Robotics Camp

Time: 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.

Dates: July 23-26

Place: SJC Central Campus
Details: Students in eighth-12th grade will discover what it’s like to build and program robots for competition. FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) is a nonprofit organization devoted to helping young people discover and develop a passion for science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM). San Jacinto College is now considered a FTC affiliate partner for the southeast region of Texas.

  • Robo Dogs Robotics Camp

Time: 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Dates: July 16-19

Place: SJC Central Campus
Details: Students in fifth-seventh grade will learn the basics of robots and programming, while also participating in team-building activities essential to the world of competitive robotics.

  • Summer Writing Camp

Time: TBD

Dates: June 18-22

Place: SJC Central Campus
Details: Campers will brush up on their writing skills and stay one step ahead for the Fall during this camp, hosted by Dr. David LeMaster, author of approximately 60 published works that include short stories, magazine articles, academic essays, and many plays, most of which are designed for young audiences.

  • KidSpot Theatre Camp

Time: 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Dates: June 11-15, 18-22

Place: SJC Central Campus

Details: The SJC Central Campus department of theatre and film presents an opportunity for children to develop acting skills while participating in workshops that include voice, movement, improvisations, stage acting, film acting, character development, and production. Daily rehearsals will culminate in a stage production at the end of the week.

  • San Jacinto College Central All-State Choir Camp

Time: 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Dates: July 31 to Aug. 2

Place: SJC Central Campus Dr. Monte Blue Music Building

Details: Come and learn the 2013 All-State Choral music at San Jacinto College. Daily schedule includes group rehearsals and sectionals to help high school choral students thoroughly learn their All-State music. Participants receive a packet containing all the selections on the 2013 All-State repertoire list. Camp will conclude with a performance of the All-State music at the end of the week.

Cost: $150; $125 if registered before July 13. Cost includes lunches and a camp T-shirt.

  • Piano Camp, Central Campus

Time: 8:30 a.m. to noon for elementary school students / 1 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. for middle and high school students

Dates: July 30- Aug. 3

Place: SJC Central Campus

Details: Students will participate in a week of private piano instruction by top educators from the College’s music department.

  • Piano Camp, North Campus

Time: 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Dates: June 20-24

Place: SJC North Campus, Dr. Charles Grant Fine Arts Center

Details: This camp offers two levels of instruction for students, ages 6-12. Beginners will learn basic piano techniques while intermediate-level students further their musicianship and piano skills. The week culminates in a final recital.

  • Jazz Camp, North Campus

Time: 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Dates: June 6-10

Place: SJC North Campus, Dr. Charles Grant Fine Arts Center

Details: This camp offers students, ages 10 and older, a chance to learn about great American fine arts from local jazz musicians. Campers will learn about jazz history, improvisation/theory, and rehearse in combos together to prepare for a concert at the end of the week.

  • Band Camp, North Campus

Time: 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Dates: June 13-17

Place: SJC North Campus, Dr. Charles Grant Fine Arts Center

Details: This camp offers middle and high school band members opportunities to further hone their skills and perform band literature. Activities will focus on fundamentals and rehearsing together in preparation for a concert at the end of the week.

  • Brass/Woodwind Camp, North Campus

Time: 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Dates: June 18-22

Place: SJC North Campus, Dr. Charles Grant Fine Arts Center

Details: This camp will offer high school students the experience of playing woodwind choir pieces or brass choir literature and the means of preparing for their Fall marching camps. Camper will give a joint concert at the end of the week.

  • Guitar Camp, North Campus

Time: 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Dates: June 27-July 1

Place: SJC North Campus, Dr. Charles Grant Fine Arts Center

Details: This camp provides students, ages 12-19, a chance to learn and improve one’s guitar playing abilities in any style. Participants must provide their own guitars. A final performance will be given at the end of the week.

  • Summer camp for school-age children at SJC North          

Time: 6:45 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 6:45 a.m. to 3 p.m. Friday

Dates: June 3 to Aug. 24

Place: SJC North Campus Children’s Center

Details: This camp offers children, ages 5-10, summer enrichment that include arts and crafts, games, outdoor activities, and field trips.

Cost: $150 per week, includes hot breakfast, lunch and afternoon snack

  • Summer camp for school-age children at SJC South

Time: 7 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 7 a.m. to noon Friday

Dates: June 4 to Aug. 17

Place: SJC South Campus Children’s Center

Details: This camp offers children in kindergarten-third grade plenty of summer learning experiences to prepare them for school in the Fall. 

Cost: $25 supply fee, $50 registration fee, cost per week based on days of attendance
