Galveston County Sheriff's Office
News Release
Thursday, May 17, 2012

Galveston County Sheriff’s deputies are preparing for the 11th Annual “Click It or Ticket” Seat Belt Mobilization Campaign over the next several weeks.

Joining forces with the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the Sheriff’s Office will be deploying more deputies in a grant-funded program designed to enhance driver and passenger safety and buckling down on motorists that aren’t buckling up.

As part of the “Click It or Ticket” program, lawmen will also be seeking out violations of child safety restraint statutes. Texas Occupant Restraint Laws

All passengers – even those sitting in the back seat – are required use seatbelts, and those riding in a car without a seatbelt can be ticketed if they’re not buckled up.

NHTSA estimates this program, since its inaugural year of 2002, has saved 2,843 lives and prevented over 48,000 serious injuries in Texas alone. That organization also reported some 93.7% of Texans were using their seatbelts in 2011, up from 76.1% in 2001, crediting the “Click It or Ticket” programs for positive contributions to the increased compliance.

The program runs from May 21st through June 3rd, and includes the typically busy Memorial Day weekend.
