ACC Regents Take Oath of Office
Incumbent Alvin Community College regents James DeWitt, Bel Sanchez and Doyle Swindell took the oath of office for another term during a board meeting on May 22.
DeWitt won a six-year term to the board after winning 60 percent of the vote in the May 12 election against challenger Ted Kalivoda, who received 39 percent. Sanchez and Swindell ran unopposed in the election.
DeWitt has been on the board since 1972, Sanchez has served since 2008 and Swindell has served on the board since 1982.
After reelected members took the oath of office, regents voted unanimously to maintain the officer positions on the board. Pete Nash will remain as chairman, James DeWitt vice-chair position and Karlis Ercums will serve as secretary.
The board unanimously approved a new professional position who would be director of the dual credit program. Dean of Academic Programs Drew Nelson told regents the position was needed because of the increase in students taking dual credit courses. The director of dual credit would work with high schools in Alvin, Pearland and Danbury ISDs.
In other matters the board approved a policy for rental fees and serving alcohol for civic organizations and celebrations that use the Nolan Ryan Center and the K-219 performance venue.
The board voted 5-4 to approve purchasing advertisement on the Alvin ISD Memorial Stadium. The agreement also would allow ACC to produce commercials that would air on the scoreboard during varsity football games.
The scoreboard is a cost-efficient opportunity to showcase ACC to local students and those who are visiting the stadium, Sanchez said.
“That is advertising that will be shown to all those folks who are coming into to our area,” she said.
Nash said he voted against the scoreboard contract because he felt the college should not have the 10-year obligation.
“I don’t feel like it’s an effective way to help the college,” he said.
The board will meet next on June 28.
