Soroptimist International of Alvin presents grants, scholarships, awards at luncheon

Grants, scholarships and awards were given by the Soroptimist International of Alvin (SIOA) members during their End of Year Luncheon on June 19.

SIOA awarded a total of $7,600 in grants during the event. The grants went to Brazoria County Alcohol Recovery Center, Alvin High School Close Up, Communities in Schools, Crossover Mission, Hope Clinic, Hand in Hand Child Development Center, Thelma Ley Anderson Family of YMCA and Women’s Center of Brazoria County.

“These organizations provide needed services to women and children in our community,” SIOA President Joan Young. ”we are pleased we can provide that assistance.”

SIOA helps women in other ways by supporting educational endeavors that foster economic independence and stability and a higher quality of life. Members presented scholarships to Alvin Community College students Collette Mickens with $500 for the Woman’s Opportunity award. The Returning Women awards were given to Liz Sitta, Sheila Jones and Stacy Barrios. The Violet Richardson scholarship went to Chelsea Stoker with an additional donation to her service project at Hope Church.

During the event, SIOA also recognized local women who have made a significant impact on the organization and community.

This year’s award recipients included Denise Babb, of Danbury, who was named Volunteer of the Year, and Wendy Del Bello, who was honored as the Woman of Distinction for 2012.

Also recognized during the luncheon for their dedication and contributions to SIOA were charter members Joan Rossano and Joyce Ellis as well as long-time member Bobbie Briscoe Moore.

SIOA participates in numerous fundraisers each year, such as Men Who Cook and the Serendipity Sale, in order to provide grants for local groups and help women directly with scholarships and resources for other needs.

Chartered in 1984, SIOA is part of an international volunteer group and composed of local business and professional women with the desire to help improve the lives of women and children.
