Port Arthur City Council on Tuesday voted 6-0-2, with Mayor Deloris "Bobbie" Prince and Robert Williamson recusing themselves, to approve allocation of $68,700 in Community Development Block Grant funds to several non-profit service organizations.
The allocations were: Gift of Live, $5,000; Nutrition & Service For Seniors, $10,000; Law Academy, $3,000; PANAC, $4,000; Port Arthur Flyers Track Club, $4,000; South East Texas Regional Planning Commission, $10,000; Camp Fire, $1,200; YMCA, $2,000; Catholic Charities, $10,000; IEA-Inspire, Encourage, Achieve, $3,000; Community Retirement Home, Inc., $2,000; Program of Health Excellence, $3,000; Lifesaver Ministry, $3,000; Willie Carter Community Outreach, $3,000; Port Arthur Helping Our People Excel, $4,000; and Port Arthur American Little League, Inc., $1,500.
The city council voted 6-0-2, with Prince and Williamson recusing themselves, to approve an amendment to the 2011 CDBG budget for the Southeast Texas Camp Fire Council, Inc. to allow use of the remaining balance of $1,628.04 to provide for youths to attend a resident summer camp at Camp Niwana in Woodville.
The city council voted 7-1, with Derrick Freeman opposed, to renew a contract with Rad Graphics of Nederland for tee-shirts, windbreakers, coveralls and belts for the fire department.
The city council voted 7-0-1, with Willie “Bae” Lewis recusing himself, to authorize the city manager to enter into a construction authorization and donation agreement with Port Arthur for Positive Action, a west side community clinic.
The city council voted 0-8 to deny a special use permit that would have allowed the operation of a community event center in the Alamo Heights Addition.
A proposed resolution regarding appointments to the Port Arthur Youth Advisory Council was deferred for a future meeting, due to no motion at Tuesday’s meeting.
A resolution regarding the appointment process to the Municipal Housing Authority was removed from the agenda.
