Leroy Stanley, attending the first meeting since his appointment to the city council last week, referred to concerns expressed by members of the Hispanic community who had complained about the district lines that were used for his selection; and announced that he plans to represent all people in his district.
Council Member Pat Van Houte, who said she has nothing against Stanley, noting that he is a nice guy, said that she also has a “difference of opinion” on the district lines that were used in the appointment, which she considered a violation of the City Charter.
Mayor Johnny Isbell said that he disagreed with the Hispanic opposition to Stanley’s appointment, arguing that appointment and/or hiring decisions should be based upon who is best qualified and “not on skin color”.
