Carriage Accident Update

(Galveston, TX) – The following is an update to the previous press release in reference to the carriage accident at 21st and Ave L.

The deceased has been identified as Bobby McKelvey, 57 year old male from Sugarland. His wife, Renee McKelvey, was also in the carriage and is 46 years old from Sugarland; she is listed in stable condition.

Another passenger, Holli Vowell, is 18 years old and is a Galveston County resident; she is listed in stable condition.

The operator of the carriage, Joe Hodsdon, is a 26 year old Gavleston resident; he is listed in stable condition.

The passenger of the motor vehicle, Garrett Constance, is 22 years old from the Woodlands. Mr. Constance left the hospital against medical advice.

The speed of the vehicle is yet to be determined. The vehicle is a black 2006 2 door Infinity G35.


(Galveston, TX) – On July 21, 2012 at approximately 11:00 PM officers responded to the 2100 block of Avenue L for an accident involving a horse drawn carriage and a motor vehicle.

The motor vehicle struck the rear of the carriage that in the intersection of 21st Street and Ave L. Both vehicles were heading southbound towards the Seawall when the accident occurred.

All four people in the carriage were injured and transported to JSER along with the passenger of the motor vehicle. One person has died from the accident.

There is now a total of three intoxication assault charges and one intoxication manslaughter charge. Bonds now total $250,000.

The driver of the motor vehicle, Mike Grayson (01/12/91 from Conroe), attempted to flee the scene, but witnesses detained him until police arrived. Mr. Grayson failed field sobriety tests and admitted that he had been drinking. Mr. Grayson also stated that he was on medication at the time of the accident. Mr. Grayson was transported to the hospital for a mandatory blood draw.

The District Attorney’s office was consulted and supported a total of three intoxication assault charges and one intoxication manslaughter charge. Bonds now total $250,000..

The horse involved suffered a laceration to its left leg and was released to the owner at the scene.
