Galveston County Commissioners Court
News Release
Tuesday, July 24, 2012

Galveston County Commissioners Court today voted 3-1, with Kevin O’Brien opposed, to approve a lease agreement with Lauterburg, LTD for the operation of the Mainland Care Here Clinic at 600 Gulf Freeway in the old Bebco Building where the Galveston Central Appraisal District operated for several years.

“I feel that the county needs to lease no more properties, nowhere,” O’Brien said.  “It’s just an expense to the citizens.”

O’Brien said his vote has nothing to do with Care Here, which provides health care services to county employees, or the matter of moving Care Here.

“I just felt that we have adequate spaces in other places that I discussed with other people before,” he said.  “We have lots of real estate.  We have a big, giant, huge building in the Mid County Building.  We have space available in Dickinson behind the Road Department.  I don’t want to see the county paying lease payments to anybody.”

The commissioners court voted unanimously to appoint Simon Urbanic to the Gulf Coast Rail District Board.

The commissioners court voted unanimously to replace retiring Gulf Coast Center Board of Trustees member Gerald W. Mitchell with Vivina Renfro; to replace retiring member James T. Floyd with Linda Coleman; and to replace retiring member David Walker with Lt. Jaime Castro.

The commissioners court voted unanimously to approve an exemption from the maximum in-hire rate for the position of internal audit supervisor for a position Grade 21 and above to Step E, but declined to approve a rehire at Grade 21, Step R for the position.

The commissioners court deferred action on a change order in a contract with the Crane Group for the San Leon Fire Department.  The change order would have decreased the contract sum by $10,857.

The commissioners court deferred action on an $84,699.33  change order to the contract with Metro City Construction LP for the Owens Drive Improvement Project.

The commissioners court voted to defer award of a bid to Travel Counselors, Inc. of Galveston for the county’s travel management services.

The commissioners court voted unanimously to deny ten requests for waiver of penalty and interest for the delinquent payment of ad valorem taxes because the delinquencies were not caused by a mistake in a government office.

All other agenda items were approved unanimously with Commissioner Ken Clark absent. Agenda Packet
