Galveston ISD Trustees swear-in Mary Cazares at board meeting
Local banker takes the seat of former Trustee and current councilperson Norman Pappous;
seat up for election in November
GALVESTON, Texas – Galveston ISD welcomed a new board member at the monthly Board of Trustees meeting on July 26. Local banker, Mary Cazares, takes the seat of Norman Pappous for District 3C, who recently won a seat on City Council. Trustees voted 5-1, David O’Neal against, to approve Cazares, who had been recommended for the seat by Pappous.
Cazares graduated from Ball High in 1984 and also attended Galveston College. She has over 25 years of experience working in the local banking industry, first at Guaranty Bank, then for BBVA Compass Bank. She works BBVA Compass as the Senior Preferred Relationship Manager.
The District 3C spot will be up for election in November. GISD has started accepting applications for the November 6 election. Applications are available at the GISD Support Center at 3904 Ave. T with all applications due on August 20 at 5 p.m.
Other district spots up for election include 1A and 4D, currently served by Dr. Jeff Temple and Carol Greaney-Wurst. Both current Trustees filed their applications to run for their seats in the November election. Dr. Temple is seeking election after serving as a replacement for former Board President Kelly Chambers and current Board Secretary Greaney-Wurst is seeking her third term, serving since 2006.
