EL CENTRO DE CORAZÓN SEEKS DONATIONS NOW FOR SCHOOL SUPPLIES
TO DISTRIBUTE AT FREE BACK-TO-SCHOOL HEALTH FAIR FOR LOW INCOME ELEMENTARY STUDENTS AND FAMILY MEMBERS
Health Fair is Set for Saturday, August 4, 2012
Who: El Centro de Corazón is hosting a Back-To-School Health Fair at its John S. Dunn Health Center on Saturday, Aug. 4, and will distribute backpacks and school supplies for elementary school students in need of financial assistance. GE, Frost Bank, Amegy Bank, BBVA Compass, CVS, Walgreens, and CARisma are generous supporters of this annual event.
The mission of El Centro de Corazón is to promote the individual, community, and social health of the East End and the greater Houston area. El Centro de Corazón is a community-based Federally Qualified Health Center (FQHC) which provides adult and pediatric primary care, women’s health, dental, and behavioral health services through five health centers. El Centro is at the heart of making Houston a healthy community through quality care that reaches the entire family, treating the whole person.
What: A free Back-To-School Health Fair to promote healthy living and distribute donated backpacks and school supplies to Houston’s low-income elementary school-aged students. The Health Fair will offer free dental screenings, free haircuts, assistance with Medicaid, CHIP and CHIP pre-natal enrollment along with healthy eating tips and activities for all ages. No advance registration is required for students and families who want to attend the Health Fair.
Donations of school supplies and funds that can be used to purchase school supplies for elementary students are needed NOW from community supporters, businesses, churches and other service organizations. Supporters can send checks or money orders made payable to El Centro de Corazon and earmarked for School Supplies mailed to the attention of Amber Joy 7037 Capitol St. Houston, TX 77011. El Centro de Corazón will distribute lightweight drawstring backpacks contributed by General Electric and filled by volunteers with donated school supplies for the first 300 students who arrive at the Health Fair. Any students who do not receive a backpack on Aug. 4 will be placed on a waiting list for school supplies, and school supplies then will be allocated to them based on the availability of additional donated school supplies and family financial need.
