City of Galveston Tropical Storm Preparations
by Jim Guidry
Friday, August 03, 2012
Galveston City Manager Michael Kovacs has updated city staff on preparations for Tropical Storm Ernesto, which has moved into the Caribbean.
"Tropical Storm Ernesto is in the pipeline and we could see hurricane preparation operations begin to really crank up soon," Kovacs said in a memo to department heads. "The state may have conference calls on Sunday."
Kovacs said that he and Emergency Management Coordinator Charlie Kelly will continue to monitor the situation over the weekend and will keep Mayor Lewis Rosen informed.
In the meantime, Kovacs provided a list of precautionary actions city department heads should follow.
consider reducing overtime or extra duty assignments over the weekend and early next week to rest the troops and be ready to shift over to emergency preparations in all operations gradually and deliberately without alarming the public
take care of your personal family preparedness and encourage staff to do the same. Make a plan, get your stuff, pack your kit, be ready to protect your home, etc.
be ready to make last minute supply orders early Monday
remember your checklists and plans and go through them, we always forget something if we don't use our plans
we will likely talk about recalling people from vacations Monday
