by Garrett Bryce
Thursday, August 09, 2012

The Galveston College Board of Regents on Wednesday voted unanimously to accept funding for the first year of a five-year, $3,133,142 grant award from the United States Department of Education.

The grant is part of the Modern Strategies for Student Success Project. The college will receive $627,149 for FY 2013 through the grant, which is aimed at increasing Hispanic and all students who receive degrees or certificates.

The college will use the funding to enhance instruction in developmental courses, modernize labs for developmental instruction, provide advisement tools and strengthen technology infrastructure.

The board voted to approve the proposed budget for FY2013, and hold a public hearing on August 20. The proposed budget totals $18,589,630.37. Final approval of the budget will be considered following public hearings to receive input from citizens.

The board voted to award annual contracts for various services, including:

  • Gowen, Inc. of Houston for HVAC inspection, maintenance and repair services
  • W.M. Jones Construction of League City for plumbing services
  • Crescent Electrical of La Marque for electrical services
  • Vaugh Construction, which has a Galveston office, for general construction services

The board voted to ratify the appointment of three full-time instructors. Ronald Foster was hired as instructor and program director for the Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning program, Crystal Reppert as an English instructor, and Robert Shields as instructor and program director for the Industrial Systems program.

The board voted to approve new salary schedules for adjunct, overload pay and part-time compensation beginning in the fall semester.

All items were approved, with the exception of adoption of a five-year institutional master plan, which was deferred for further study. All votes were unanimous with all members present.  Agenda
