BARC Animal Shelter and Adoptions
Mayor Parker's Pets of the Week
HOUSTON - BARC Animal Shelter and Adoptions announced the Mayor's Pets of the Week with Houston's Mayor Annise Parker today: Jerry, a Black Mouth Cur and Basset Hound Mix, and Callie, a Calico and Domestic Short Hair Mix. The photos can also be viewed on BARC's Facebook Page: http://www.facebook.com/BARCHouston.
More than 600 BARC dogs and cats have gone home with their forever families since the national ASPCA Rachael Ray $100K Challenge began on August 1. BARC hopes to reach at least 2,100 dog and cat adoptions before October 31, the last day of the $100,000 Challenge. That's an increase of more than 620 dogs and cats adopted from BARC compared to the same three month period in 2011.
BARC and 49 other animal shelters across the nation are competing in the Challenge to save at least 300 more lives compared to their 2011 total between August 1 and October 31. The shelter that saves the most lives compared to their 2011 total between August and October, wins the $100,000 grand prize grant.
"From Calico mix kittens like Callie to full-grown Black Mouth Cur and Basset Hound mixes like Jerry, BARC has every type of dog and cat Houstonians could possibly want to adopt." said Alfred Moran, Director of the Administration & Regulatory Affairs Department, which oversees BARC. "There are a number of reasons dogs and cats come into BARC, but they all have one thing in common: They want to go home with a family that can give them the love and care they deserve."
Jerry and Callie, the Mayor's Pets of the Week are available for adoption. Details listed below.
Name: Jerry
Animal ID: A1089400
Breed: Black Mouth Cur/Basset Hound Mix
Age: Approximately 1 year, 7 months
Size: Medium
More about Jerry: Jerry is an absolutely adorable dog that wants to be your best friend as soon as he meets you. He's playful and energetic, but gives lots of kisses and has plenty of love to give. If you want to win his heart, just scratch his belly. He is very loyal, and seems pretty easy to train if given the opportunity to learn. He came into BARC a little over a month ago as a stray and was already neutered. Now, Jerry has age-appropriate vaccinations, a city license and a microchip. He is ready to go home with his forever family!
Name: Callie
Animal ID: A1084118
Breed: Calico/Domestic Short Hair Mix
Age: Approximately 17 weeks
More about Callie: Callie is an adorable kitty that has quite a story to tell. She is a little bit skittish and shy, but loves to be held and has lots of love to give. She came into BARC when she was very, very tiny. In fact, she had to go home with one of BARC's foster pet parents who bottle fed and socialized her until she was ready for adoption. Now, Callie is spayed, has age-appropriate vaccinations, has a city license and is microchipped. She is healthy and ready to go home with her new family!
BARC has many dogs and cats in a wide variety of shapes, sizes, colors and ages that are waiting to go home with their forever families. Jerry and Callie are two of many animals at BARC waiting for their new home. Visit www.Facebook.com/BARCHouston to find out more about the Mayor's Pets of the Week and other animals at BARC.
