This past May, the first Lemonade Day Galveston involved 500 hundred children manning lemonade stands across the Island with the sponsorship of dozens of local organizations. Each kid The event raised more than $239 per stand, with over 92 percent of participants contributing to local charities. Lemonade Day Galveston, part of a national event set for May 5, 2013, expects to be even bigger and draw even more stands.
“The young entrepreneurs learn to set goals, develop a business plan, establish a budget, seek investors, provide customer service, save for the future, and give back to the community,” said Gina Spagnola, Lemonade Day Galveston City Director. “Lemonade Day is an opportunity for a community to show local youth they care and train the next generation of entrepreneurs through a free, fun, engaging, and empowering activity. There is no better way to teach our children what it takes to succeed in life and give back to those in need.”
The Lemonade Day Kick-Off on October 4 will also include the Step-Up for Education Expo as a way to highlight the educational options available in Galveston. Schools participating in the business expo include those from Galveston Independent School District, Odyssey Academy, O’Connell Catholic School, Trinity Episcopal School, Satori Elementary and Ambassador’s Preparatory Academy.
“This is a great way to find out how you and your business can get more involved in our local schools,” said Fred Racshke, Chair of the Galveston Chamber of Commerce Education Committee. “Our local schools are the cornerstone of the community and it’s important that we connect our future generations to the opportunities they have in their home town. This expo is a big first step in bringing our schools and businesses together.”
The event is hosted by the Galveston Chamber of Commerce Education Committee, formed in 2010 to bring attention to the diversity of choices in Galveston schools as well as provide assistance in educational improvement initiatives. Lemonade Day Galveston is just one of many initiatives the Education Committee implemented in Galveston schools, in addition to a summer job fair for high school students, and creating award-winning marketing material for potential Island residents. The committee is comprised of Chamber members and local educators.
