The 389 ft. Littoral Combat Ship, Fort Worth, arrived at the Port of Galveston without much fanfare under gray skies at 7:35 a.m. today.  The ship was assisted by two tugboats provided by G&H Towing, the W.D. Haden of Bay Houston Towing and the Lamar by Suderman/Young Towing.

Orange and gray, US Coast Guard patrol boats with a large machine gun mounted on their bow, escorted the war ship to Pier 21 for docking.  Other vessels in the Galveston Ship Channel, like shrimp boats, fishing boats, party boats and the Galveston/Bolivar ferry carried on with business as normal.

The ship is named for Fort Worth, Texas, the 17th largest city in the United States and the 5th largest city in Texas. It is the first ship to bear the name and is the second ship in the Freedom-variant of littoral combat ships.

The commissioning ceremony is scheduled for 10 a.m., Saturday, Sept. 22, at the port of Galveston. The Navy plans to stream the ceremony live on
www.navy.mil. United States Representative, Kay Granger, of Texas' 12th Congressional District, is the ship's sponsor and will give the command to "man our ship and bring her to life" during the ceremony.

The ship will be open for general public visiting on a limited basis on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, Sept. 18-20 from 1 - 4 p.m., with the last tour starting at 3:30 p.m. Guests are asked to wear comfortable closed-toed shoes and limit items carried on board. All desiring to tour the ship will go through security screening prior to gaining access to the ship.

Following commissioning, Fort Worth will proceed to its homeport in San Diego, Calif.
