Galveston County
Galveston County Commissioners Court
by Garrett Bryce
Tuesday, September 18, 2012

Galveston County Commissioners Court today voted 4-1, with Judge Mark Henry opposed, to adopt a resolution requesting that the Texas General Land Office adhere to the county’s first choice of URS Corporation to operate the Round 2 housing recovery program.

URS Corporation would serve as grant administrator for the second round of the recovery program for Hurricane Ike damages.

Henry said he voted against the item because the initial perception was that the county did not submit a rank ordering when submitting possible contractors to serve as grant administrator for the program, but received word from the General Land Office later that the contractors had been ranked.

“I couldn’t vote for it because that was not exactly how it was done,” Henry said.  Listen

The commissioners court deferred action regarding award of a contract for delinquent property tax collection services.

A motion was made initially to table the item, but was later withdrawn.  The item was then deferred.

The county received two proposals for the contract, one from Linebarger Goggan Blair & Sampson, LLC, and a second from Perdue Brandon Fielder Collins & Mott, LLP.  Linebarger Goggan Blair & Sampson were recommended for award of the contract by an evaluation team.

The commissioners court deferred action regarding the receipt and filing of bank contracts.

The commissioners court voted unanimously to adopt a resolution naming a portion of State Highway 87 as Jane Long Memorial Highway.  The portion of the roadway to be named Jane Long Memorial Highway extends from the ferry landing to the intersection of Highway 124.

The commissioners court deferred action on a contract with Prosperity Bank for file transfer protocol.  The item was deferred at the request of Galveston County Tax Assessor-Collector Cheryl Johnson.

The commissioners court voted unanimously to approve, subject to legal review, several contracts for the restoration of the Llewellyn Building, including:

  • A general construction contract with CZA Developers, LLC
  • A contract with Ardent Construction for elevator renovations
  • A contract with Mitchell Chuoke Plumbing, Inc. for plumbing work
  • A contract with Crescent Engineering Company, Inc. for electrical work

All other items were approved by unanimous vote.  All members were present.  Agenda Packet
