Captain Joshua Slocum: Around the World Alone
with Laurence Shallenberger
Laurence Shallenberger will be at the Houston Maritime Museum to present "Captain Joshua Slocum: Around the World Alone" on Thursday, October 18th, from 7-8pm at 2204 Dorrington, Houston, TX 77030.
Captain Joshua Slocum was a "celebrated sailor and adventurer" who, in 1898, became the first man to sail single-handedly around the world. His solo circumnavigation trip took him three-years to complete and was carried out aboard a 36-foot craft named the Spray.
After becoming bored with his monotonous shipyard work, Capt. Slocum decided to rebuild the Spray which had fallen into disrepair board by board. Once repaired, Capt. Slocum underwent his 46,000 mile journey around the globe. This classic sea tale has inspired many others to duplicate his journey, and took more than 25 years before another person completed the voyage. Capt. Slocum later went on to publish a book and tour with the Spray where he spoke about his adventures at sea.
Join Laurence and the Houston Maritime Museum in exploring this unique piece of maritime culture! Admission is free and includes access to the museum's exhibits.
