Dr. Greg Smith Named Superintendent of the Year in Texas

League City, Texas- Greg Smith, Superintendent of Schools for the Clear Creek Independent School District, has been named the 2012 Superintendent of the Year by the Texas Association of School Boards. “Of interest to the state selection committee was Smith’s belief that learning needs to be redefined. He stressed that kids need a love for learning, the ability to think, learn, and relearn and not just be test takers. He recognizes that we educate for jobs that don’t exist today. The committee also noted that through his love of children, Smith has made the community a better place”, said Barbara Williams with the Texas Association of School Boards. TASB News Release

Smith was nominated by the CCISD Board of Trustees for his student-centered leadership. “Congratulations to Dr. Greg Smith for being named the 2012 Superintendent of the Year.  This most prestigious award recognizes one outstanding superintendent of the more than 1,000 throughout the state of Texas,” said Board President Ken Baliker. “Greg’s leadership style epitomizes the first “C” in CCISD, for Courage, as he has had the helm during a difficult fiscal period for public education and made decisions among competing priorities that keep kids’ education first.  We are blessed that Dr. Smith calls CCISD home.”

Dr. Smith, who has been the district’s superintendent since 2008, says this award is one he shares with all of those who have invested in children. “This award could not have happened without having a great team made up of trustees, staff, parents but most of all, great students,” said Smith. “I am humbled by this recognition because Texas is home to many outstanding superintendents.”

Shortly after joining CCISD, Smith rallied the entire community to create a vision for the children of Clear Creek ISD.  While employee and parental involvement are naturally part of any strategic planning process, Smith made this more than a ceremonial procedure.  He became the listener and the learner, allowing the aspirations of the school board, teachers, principals, parents and students help craft a five-year strategic plan. The plan has fueled his every decision and discussion for the past four years and has resulted in an increase in student performance. In June, more than 97% of CCISD students graduated with plans to attend college, the workforce or the military.
